A Good Old-Fashioned Band Concert
Yale Concert Band invites audience to bring bells and participate in Tchaikovksy's "1812 Overture"! Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director ?Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the "1812 Overture" to commemorate Russia?s triumph over Napoleon, but this rousing piece has turned into a beloved American icon. Today?s audience members are invited to bring bells of any kind and participate in the celebratory finale. ?Adam Gorb has described his "Yiddish Dances" as ?very much a party piece.? Comprised of five movements that are all based on Klezmer music ? the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe ? each dance is harmonically rich and full of metrical asymmetries. ?Percy Aldridge Grainger?s "Molly on the Shore" is based on two Irish folk dances: ?Temple Hill? and ?Molly on the Shore.? This boisterous piece is known for its tireless energy and rhythmic intensity. ?George Cohan?s "You?re a Grand Old Flag," Samuel Barber?s "Commando March," and Edwin Goldman?s "Third Alarm March" are three American marches for band that are filled with patriotic spirit and excitement. Also: "Scenes from The Louvre" (N. Dello Joio) "Overture to Colas Breugnon" (D. Kabalevsky) Public info phone: (203) 432-4111; http://www.yale.edu/yaleband
